It seems as though not everyone's blogs were "inaccessible" yesterday when Aminus3 took the system down for maintenance and upgrading. So I apologize for not leaving comments yesterday.
Coit Tower was built atop Telegraph Hill in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the City of San Francisco. Lillie bequeathed one-third of her estate to the City of San Francisco "to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved."
Contrary to popular opinion, the tower was not designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle. This myth persists in part because of Lillie Hitchcock Coit's affinity with the San Francisco fire fighters of the day, in particular with Knickerbocker Engine Company Number 5. Although the architects claimed to have no design precedent in mind, during this time Europe saw the construction of aesthetically designed power stations that could be claimed as prototypes (e.g.: Battersea Power Station).
The art deco tower, 210 feet (64 meters) of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard with murals by 26 different artists and numerous assistants. Photo taken April 14, 2008.
Thank you for showing and sharing with us a the image, building as well as it's history.

An interesting image in HDR, I believe, with a great writeup. Is the leaning tower effect intended?

beautiful view -- i love that neighborhood surrounding the tower -- its very quite and very colorful architecturally. ! where did you take this from though? was this with a telephoto lens?

@dj.tigersprout: I'm not exactly sure where it was taken since this was all unfamiliar territory for me, but I can tell you that it wasn't too far from Lombard Street (where it is most crooked) because I have photos of Lombard Street both before and after taking this photo. It's a good thing I didn't rename my photos based on what's in the photo like I usually do, but kept the "IMG_1388.JPG" name to them so that you can tell when it was taken or, in this case, where it was taken from. And I would like to say that this was not taken with a telephoto lens, but only used my zoom lens. The reason I'm leaning this way is because my telephoto lens was creating a lot of "bending" around the edges and there is none here.
Definitely a landmark! Thanks for this interesting info and that picture from a sunny place!

Very nice shot and piece of history, the tower does make a statement in the area. It's something you might see in the middle-east countries.
