Close-up of the altar in Immaculate Conception Church. You can see that I have progressively gotten closer and closer to the altar these last few days and the closer I got, the more guilty I felt about photographing the altar.
I am not knowledgable in Latin, but it has similarities to Spanish, which I did study, and I believe Ave Maria Gratia Plena translates to Hail Mary, full of grace. The entire sanctuary from Monday is pictured here. Photo taken May 2, 2009.

No need to feel guilty, spread the splendor! Besides that, churches always tell something about the societies and people who built it, which is always interesting. Super shot, by the way, emphasizing contrast was a good idea here.

MadScientist is right, of course, but there is still a misplaced sense of encroachment in photographing an altar which I often feel myself. Detailing is superb here.

I don't think there is anything wrong with photographing a beautiful worship space like this. Especially because you are sharing it with the rest of us here. Think of it as visual evangelism.
