Designed by architect John Root. He designed this iron staircase that winds down from floor 12 to floor 2 and projects into the atrium. It has beautiful intricate patterns in the balustrades and risers. An oriel staircase juts out from the main wall of the building, but does not reach the ground. Root's oriel staircase, projects into the atrium, but does not reach the ground floor.
I went on this tour of The Rookery Building given by the Chicago Architectural Center. It includes a tour the gives you views of the oriel staircase looking up through the multiple floors to marvel at this nautilus staircase. Those views will come eventually. Until then, I keep you in suspense. :-)
