A River Runs Through It

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 21 December 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

The Dead River runs through the Illinois Beach State Park along its southern boundary. The days of mid-Autumn has taken away the color of what was once a lush landscape. What caught my eye was the line of cumulus clouds making their way from west to east.

Photo taken October 17, 2009.

The clouds are eye popping, I am wondering why it's called the "Dead River" though?

21 Dec 2009 2:44pm

@Ralph Jones: It gets blocked by sandbars most of the year, which forms an elongated pond. When the water finally rises high enough due to heavy rains or melting snow, it breaks through the sandbar and drains the surrounding marshes. The river is actually quite healthy and provides plenty of wetland plants that birds are attracted to.

Something I don't see very often; most of our rivers are stabilized and to see such a natural system is very touching for me. Super shot, great golden colours and these clouds are really fluffy! :-)
