Leaning Columns of Lincoln

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 17 June 2010 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The columns stand 44 feet tall with a base diameter of 7.5 feet. Each column is built from 12 drums including the capital. The columns, like the exterior walls and façades, are inclined slightly toward the building's interior. This is to compensate for perspective distortions which would otherwise make the Lincoln Memorial appear asymmetrical. Seen here is the colonnade on the south elevation of the memorial.

What a powerful perspective ! An impressive architecture indeed. I love the repetition here, between the columns and their shadows.

Another wonderful shot. The builders were pretty smart in knowing how much to tilt the columns. I would have tried to make them perfectly upright although they might have ended up leaning. :-)

I would think the slight tilt also helps with structure? I know when you get into cathedrals, flying buttresses and domed ceilings its all about structural integrity. I love these kinds of shots btw, but you know this ;)
