The Fern Room #2

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 26 May 2011 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

View looking back toward the main entrance of the fern room at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago, Illinois. Jens Jensen, who designed the Conservatory in 1906, wanted to give visitors a glimpse of what Illinois might have looked like millions of years ago. Lush ferns, rocky outcroppings and an indoor lagoon evoke the swampy landscape of prehistoric Chicago. The Fern Room is home to the palm-like cycad; one of the oldest species of plants on earth.

This was taken from a great angle. It just gives you an idea of the huge variety of ferns that there are and the different sizes. Beautiful composition.

Love this composition! It's such a contrast between scenes with a primitive looking jungle and the latticework above it.

What a beautiful calm place! I'm thinking that right about now, this is the only place in Chicagoland where it isn't blustery-windy! I like the sense of scale you get, with the addition of people in the background.
