Athabascan Fish Camps

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 19 October 2015 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

One of our stops while on the Riverboat Discovery included the touring of the Chena Indian Village, a replica village of the area of Fairbanks, Alaska. The accommodations of the Athabascan fish camp include the white canvas wall tents, which is where families would sleep at fish camp. Surprisingly, comfortable beds were made from spruce boughs covered with caribou hides. If it was chilly out, a fire could be built in a small stove inside the tent.

Although rudimentary, the appearance of the first is very aesthetic.
The second has more comfort : alcove with mosquito net, stove for heating and cooking, wood storage ... :)

They seem to provide a shelter from the cold wind as long as the canvas endures it. If they used it, then it was effective. Very nice presentation.

The point of view gives us the sense of how rustic this area is.

They look quite roomy. I am sure with a fire, it would be quite warm and comfortable in there. Wonderful information!

Looks rather basic but would be much better than sleeping in the open.
