Misty Fjords National Monument #1

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 4 April 2016 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Misty Fjords National Monument is a national monument and wilderness area administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Tongass National Forest. Misty Fjords is about 40 miles east of Ketchikan, Alaska, along the Inside Passage coast in extreme southeastern Alaska, comprising 2,294,343 acres of Tongass National Forest in Alaska's Panhandle. All but 151,832 acres are designated as wilderness. Congress reserved the remainder for the Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit, possibly the largest such mineral deposit in the world.

It was a very rainy start to this excursion which had us worried as to what we would see (and not see). The tour guide told us had it not been raining, we wouldn't have seen the waterfalls that we did see. Whether or not that is true, I cannot confirm. The mist and fog definitely added nice atmosphere to the composition.

I ALWAYS disliked fog and mist in my photos in the beginning years of photography until I saw how they were worked into other photographers' photos and began to like it.

Photo captured September 17, 2015.

Yes, fog and clouds can make for a nice atmosphere as in this case. Subtle colors can appear that would be washed away by bright sun. A very lovely image.

Fine composition and great atmosphere! Working with fog and mist is not easy and you have done well to embrace them. The lift the mood here very nicely.
