Spotted in the South Boeing Gallery, overlooking the fountains of Millennium Park in Chicago, Illinois. They are cast iron and stand 20 feet tall—Paula (furthest), Laura (middle) and Ines (closest). They are very solid-looking but also have a hologram-like quality. These serene, dreamlike portraits offer a counterbalance to the children’s noisy play in the fountains below. The artist, Juame Plensa of Spain, likes how the faces are stretched and seem to disappear as you walk by. Plensa titled the new works placed in Millennium Park “1,004 Portraits”, since in his own words he merely added four new images to the 1,000 faces already depicted in his two tall video sculptures known as the “Crown Fountain”.
