Wood Lily (Lilium philadelphicum)

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 13 March 2017 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

From the archives...

When I first spotted this flower from the sides, I had mistaken it for a daylily. Upon closer inspection from above, I noticed that each of the petals was attached to the stamen with its own petiole, or stalk, rather than the petal being attached directly forming the corolla.

Thanks to London Caller, this flower has been identified.

Fascinating observation! I certainly wouldn't have noticed and taken it for a daylily, too!
Apart from that, this is a very pretty flower, colour and shape and markings, and a wonderful image with a lovely bokeh.

It sounds like what we are in for. We have had no snow all winter. This is gorgeous. I love the colors and the pattern. I really like how you photographed this flower! It highlights the beautiful symmetry of nature.

beautiful color and detail. The symmetry of the bloom is relieved by the asymmetrical details in the background.
