Plate Tectonics?

Posted by Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 14 February 2018 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

In my quest to get to the southern breakwater to capture photos of the morning sunrise, I was wondering where all the "creeking" noise that was heard was coming from. When I got to the breakwater, the answer was right in front of me and captured here. The individual ice "plates" were expanding and rubbing against each other and the breakwater, creating the creeking noise; sometimes quite audible! The white flaky stuff on top of the ice plates is the ice that is getting ground up between the plates as they rub against each other.

From one perspective, Steven, this reminds me of what one might see from an airplane over the frozen tundra. You have me wondering about the scale of these plates. Are they the size of a person's foot or much larger?

14 Feb 2018 6:05am

@Ginnie: That "cloudy" triangular piece of ice toward the center is approximately three feet in height.

A fabulous image. I have heard that noise before and it wasn't good! It is a long story but I had lived in California for a long time and when I moved to Maryland, I did not know that one should not walk on a frozen or what I thought was a frozen lake.
