Casimir Pulaski Monument 3/3

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 26 February 2020 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Located in Monterey Square, the Pulaski monument is made from Italian marble, with smaller elements of granite. It is 55 feet tall. The monument has a bronze bas relief of mounted Pulaski, and is topped with a statue of Liberty, with the stars and stripes banner. The monument was designed by Robert Launitz. The side of the monument as seen here states, "The heroic Pole who fell mortally wounded, fighting for America's liberty, at the Siege of Savannah. 9 Oct 1779."

Photo captured October 8, 2019.

great detail of this sculpture, though what 2 Romans (or are they Greeks?) don't have much to do with the facts.

Jason Kravitz from Brussels, Belgium

The name always makes me think of the song by Sufjan Stevens, though I'm still not quite clear exactly of this great legacy of Pulaski who seems to be an iconic and much celebrated figure of Illinois.

27 Feb 2020 8:23pm

@Jason Kravitz: I believe that is because there is such a large Polish population in Chicago. It was always rumored (but not true) that Chicago had the largest Polish population outside of Poland. Casimir Pulaski Day is also celebrated in Illinois, which is next week (March 2nd).
