Vinca Minor “Bowles” Periwinkle

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 18 May 2020 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Spotted behind our garage is this periwinkle that we have never seen before. I figured it must have been a wild flower variety that grows with a dense groundcover. So I did a lot of "googling" before finally discovering its name. Some companies/nurseries are actually selling this, so I am not sure if it's "wild". We just have never seen this periwinkle before in our yard.

I captured multiple shots, hoping to get a good composition with multiple blooms, but this lone periwinkle really stood out as the best composition.

Photo captured May 7, 2020.

I find these wild and cultivated, Steven; and like you, I tried shots of more than one, but just the one needs to stand on its own as in your lovely picture

These are a popular groundcover. My dad (in Buffalo NY) grew these in a part of his garden and I have them as well in my garden. The flower should be attached to a longish stem with shiny dark green leaves that can intertwine with other plants. They can "escape" into areas they were not planted, so it's possible it sort of wandered in from another yard. I find the flowers difficult to photograph but you have a great image here.
