Cicada Invasion

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 10 June 2020 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

A cicada that was spotted on our driveway last weekend. While it's not the huge emergence of cicadas that happens approximately every 17 years (next one to occur in 2024), there were plenty that we had to avoid while walking on sidewalks. One person even removed one from the back of my shirt collar while I was in a Walgreens drugstore. While doing some web searching on cicadas, I came across this:

"Periodical cicadas are also edible. Native Americans utilized them in their diet. In 1990, several college students were filmed eating them alive. When asked what they tasted like, the students reported that they tasted like almonds. Drying them in a microwave oven carefully causes them to release an almond smell."

I feel like making a cicada salad now. :-)

Oh my, Steven. I recall that they are a delicacy in some places of the world. Don't some people even chocolate-coat them?

The story of that insect is almost romantic. I remember hearing that it only appears every 17 years and disappears soon after to wait for another return. In the picture it is beautiful. I was surprised when I read that they are also eaten.

You should definitely try one or two and report back. I'm sure they are very nutritious and it's much more environmentally friendly than eating beef :) Very nicely captured

A spectacular close up image. They have talked about having a lot of cicadas here also but I have not seen any yet. I was fascinated with watching them until their carcasses were everywhere. You had to use a broom to sweep them off of the porch and sidewalk.

Had no idea they could be eaten! I would prefer mine sau‚Äčtéed rather than live. Photo has great detail, especially of the red eye.
