The word "bud" to me sounds like something small, when this bud is more like the size of a fist. This is not your typical peony. This intersectional peony is a hybrid of the herbaceous peony and tree peony. The tree peony has woody above ground stems that remain throughout the year, much like a small shrub. The leaves, however, are deciduous and fall each autumn. Herbaceous peonies die back to the ground each autumn.
Peony bud spotted in the garden on May 16, 2020.
