Teetering on the Edge

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 25 January 2021 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

An evergreen tree at Cave Point grips the edge of the bedrock with its roots to maintain stability. One wonders how its able to survive on what has got to be a surface so lacking in nutrients and soil.

Photo captured August 19, 2020.

Talk about CLINGING to the edge, Steven. As long as the rock stays, it'll stay, I'm sure, but I wonder how long that will be?!

Lovely picture. I would guess its roots must penetrate deep into the softer strata layers for nutrients and to avoid it toppling over

Equilibre précaire pour cet arbre, la preuve en image que la nature est capable de tout.

Impressive. It seems that any storm would be the end of the tree, but it is hanging on.

That is incredible. I notice the long root in the background. Looking for some nourishment.

tetering on the edge can be a metaphor for life for so many right now. Even with our roots firmly in place, we can never know what will come along to erode that security and reality. Nicely captured Steven.

@Diane: Well put, Diane! Nice observation.

Wonderful but how is it possible that that tree is still standing?

26 Jan 2021 2:12am

Elaine Hancock from Olney, United States

That is quite an amazing view. I don't even know how that tree was able to grow to the size it is while being that close to the edge. I suppose over the years some of the rock has eroded away.

It's the proof that life is resilient. But, the end of this tree, if not by hunger, will be for diving in the water.

Great view!
