California Poppy

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 26 April 2021 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

The California Poppy is a perennial or annual plant growing to 5–60 in (13–152 cm) tall with alternately branching glaucous blue-green foliage. The leaves are alternately divided into round, lobed segments. The flowers are solitary on long stems, silky-textured, with four petals, each petal 2 to 6 cm (0.79 to 2.36 in) long and broad; flower color ranges through yellow, orange and red (with some pinks). Flowering occurs from February to September in the northern hemisphere (spring, summer, fall). The petals close at night (or in cold, windy weather) and open again the following morning, although they may remain closed in cloudy weather. It survives mild winters in its native range, dying completely in colder climates.

Spotted outside our hotel in Sedona, Arizona.

We almost always see them here in Europe (especially in England) as red. But to see them in yellow like this brings back many memories for me from my California years, Steven, back in the '70s.

I love them. I planted some on our hillside in our previous home. They became like weeds because I didn't get all the spent flowers (therefore seed heads) picked off. Every year I had more and more of them. Still love them and your photo really shows them off beautifully.
