Clark Tower

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 30 November 2021 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Clark Tower is a castle-like limestone tower located in Winterset City Park in Winterset, Iowa. It was erected in 1926, on the eightieth anniversary of the founding of Madison County, in memory of Caleb Clark, a stonemason who, along with his wife Ruth Clanton Clark, were the first settlers of Madison County. The tower stands at a height of 25 feet.

It was a long drive up the hills to reach this tower with many tight turns in Winterset City Park. It was unfortunate that it started to rain when we reached the top. Because of the weather conditions and the lack of color in the photograph, I decided to process in black and white. However, the tones were just not as good as when I processed it in sepia.

Photo captured October 11, 2021.

Do not be sorry. The picture tells you everything you need. The weather is always what it is and it matters a lot to the picture. The building of interest comes out in the right way in this picture.

The weather can sometimes add the perfect atmosphere...here, with your color manipulation, it creates a "Camelot" effect that is fantastic. A King Arthurian look to it.

This is such a wonderful tribute. The tower is beautiful. I love the stonework. I am sorry for the rain. That is always so disconcerting when you want to get a good image. But the sepia looks beautiful!

That is so very nicely shot. The tower does look like it should be in a different country.

very nice sepia tones and I love the composition including the curving road and the curving staircase. I am a bit bothered by the intersection of the top right of the tower and the tree.

Sepia still suits the scene very nicely and I like the overall composition and contrast a lot. There is plenty of detail around the scene and nice texture as well.

I'm not usually a big fan of sepia photos, but in this case I think it worked well. The idea of the old and of nostalgia is well evidenced.

In today's eyes, it's a strange thing to imagine someone being first in a place. I hope Caleb and Ruth haven't been alone for long. Living in isolation will never be a good thing.

The sepia works because of the dating of your subject. I know I've mentioned this before, but I truly admire that Americans build these kinds of monuments plus the memorials. Interesting how the spiral of the structure is mimicked by the winding and spiralling road leading up there.
