Locks of Sault Ste. Marie

Posted by
Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 14 January 2025 in Transportation and Portfolio.

As our boat drifts into the embrace of the Locks of Sault Ste. Marie, a peculiar stillness descends, as though time itself has paused to bear witness. The world narrows into a realm of cold, towering walls that envelop us, where the echo of every ripple and whisper reverberates in solemn harmony. The vastness of Lake Huron feels like a memory, left behind us as the water’s gentle rise begins to fill the void around us. Slowly, steadily, the quiet emptiness gives way to anticipation, and with it, the promise of Lake Superior emerges. The moment is both humble and profound. A transformation marked not by haste, but by the subtle power of unseen forces lifting us toward the horizon of new adventures.

Translated into Finnish, that description was almost a poem. Great, I say. At the same time, I got new support for where you live.

I really liked your descriptive note Seven, it's poetic and a good description of the feeling you must have had.
There's something eerie and a bit overwhelming about those big doors in the photo.

A wonderful scene. This is an enormous lock! I can imagine with the ships that must go through there. I have only seen the locks on the C&O canal which is very small compared to this. This must have been such an amazing trip. A perfect image for this week's prompt.

Great write-up behind this image. Without that message, there wouldn't be as much impact on the emptiness meaning.

This photograph of a lock gate effectively captures the industrial and utilitarian nature of the scene.

One of these days, I will also publish a photograph of this kind, depicting a boat descent in a dam.
